DECADES OF DEATH US TOUR 2006 -Rigel
The first half of the year 2000 was spent practicing and tightening up the new line up. The first performance of the year was at the legendary Riverhead. The band’s performance climaxed in a 300+ person riot, the ensuing chaos leaving several injured and hospitalized. The band followed up their reputation by releasing their second demo, "Vita est Militia Super Terram," in August, which received an excellent response and earned the band a cult following in the underground, both local and overseas. The early months of 2001 were filled with Dawn of Azazel regularly headlining local gigs. The 16th of June 2001 marked Dawn of Azazel's first performances outside the Auckland area at the Indigo bar in Wellington and a slot at the sold-out 2001 Satanfest in Christchurch. In December of 2001 Dawn of Azazel became the first true metal act to cross Tasman and conquer the shores of Australia. This was a tremendous success, garnishing excellent praise from the Australian metal Audience. The first half of 2002 was spent in intense rehearsals for the recording of Dawn of Azazel's first release on an international label. The "Bloodforged Abdication" 7" vinyl EP was recorded in July 2002 and released in October. This was released by cult Italian vinyl-only label Hellflame Records. The release brought to light the success of years of letter and email writing to fans and underground magazines from around the world, selling out of the limited 500 pressing on pre-sales alone. 2003 marked a great year for Dawn of Azazel's local success. The domestic release of "Bloodforged Abdication" was met with unprecedented success for a New Zealand extreme metal band. Its domestic release was accompanied by features in mainstream press, and the 120 copies set aside for NZ sold within weeks of them being released into stores. This was followed by the band’s first nationwide tour taking them to Auckland, Greymouth, Hamilton, Christchurch, and Wellington. The release attracted a myriad of offers from underground labels world wide, and secured them the support slot for U.S. godfathers of death metal Incantation's New Zealand tour. In November of 2003 Dawn of Azazel released their debut album "The Law of the Strong" though Agonia records in Poland. Featuring eight metal classics mixing blistering speed, raw brutality and total darkness that had been refined to perfection over the six years of their existence, it marked the high point of the band’s career so far. March 2004 saw the New Zealand release of the “Law of the Strong.” The band worked long and hard to promote this locally and with the help of the contacts they had made over the past years, their efforts were rewarded. Despite being a raw, uncompromising extreme metal release, the album went on to receive high praise in local mainstream music press, being given 5/5 in New Zealand's premier music magazine Rip it Up. A video produced for “Immortal Dominance” received airplay and garnered interviews for the band on all New Zealand music channels and on the national news show “Nightline.” This was accompanied by acclaim by the worldwide metal underground and features in leading worldwide metal publications such as Terrorizer and Metal Maniacs. Dawn of Azazel then hit the road to promote the new album. An eight-date New Zealand tour was followed by their first major international tour. This tour took them to Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, Holland, and Belgium. The band then continued their inexorable advance by touring Australia. Upon returning from this tour a mutual decision was reached that Tony and Phill should leave the band, as they were unable to commit sufficient time to the band’s schedule. The decision was made to continue as a three-piece and drummer Martin Cavanagh was quickly recruited to replace Phill in early 2005. This line up immediately began intense rehearsals, and their first shows were supporting Pungent Stench and then 8 Foot Sativa on a 13-date New Zealand tour. Immediately upon completing this tour, the band entered Kog studios to record their second album, “Sedition.” After spending the next few weeks completing the album, the band was invited to play one of the headlining slots at Australia’s Premiere extreme metal festival, Bloodlust 5. “Sedition” contains nine tracks of Dawn of Azazel’s most brutal and vicious material to date. The album, available on Ibex Moon Records, has already earned the band features in Metal Maniacs and Pit Magazine, and the band began its live domination of North American in June on the Decades of Death Tour with Incantation and Vital Remains.
